Dick and Betsy DeVos: Community and Economic Advocates

Dick DeVos and his wife, Betsy, have always been community and business advocates. They stressed as much when they campaigned against the public efforts to build a sports arena that would interfere with the business district’s success. That incident led the DeVos family to create the group known as Grand Action. Grand Action was a group that was to help expand business in the Grand Rapids area. Business owners within this group backed products such as the DeVos Performance Hall, Van Andel Arena and more. DeVos formed an alliance with the business owners in that group as a response to the attempted sports arena creation.

The DeVos husband and wife team have always put up a united front, but they also had separate endeavors over the years. Together the compassionate couple dedicated more than $138 million to leadership programs, $103 million to children’s hospitals and a massive helping of funds toward churches and additional projects. Separately, they’ve made a significant impact on society, as well. Betsy, for example, fought hard to get charter schools expanded. At the same time that she was doing that, Dick was fighting the rights of workers to work without being forced to join the union.

Their efforts toward education have always been in agreement. They’ve always done their best to give underprivileged people the same opportunities that their children enjoy. Although their efforts often receive support now, it was not always that way. The DeVos experienced backlash and opposition on quite a few of their efforts in the past. One such attempt was Dick’s fight for governor. Another incident in which they received rejection was when they tried to push for a voucher program to assist children who wanted to further their education but didn’t have the resources. The vouchers would allow those children to attend top-notch private schools.

Quitting was never in the DeVos’ vocabulary despite all the opposition they experienced. They continued to fight for people who couldn’t fight for themselves. Now almost half the states in the United States offer voucher programs that assist children with their educations. It’s determination like that that gives other people the motivation to persevere in their “for the people” campaigns. The DeVos have proven time and time again that dedication and persistence create change.
