Introduction
ActionResearchWiki
This wiki is dedicated to Action Research.
TheQuestionOfActionResearch
One expression of the question is:
- “How to get into action?”
Another is:
- “How do we adapt our 40-hour workweek lives to meaningful, collaborative action?”
Still another is:
- “How do I concentrate and focus on my work?”
They’re all fair.
I’ve created this wiki for two reasons. One, I need to get into action. Two, the world needs to get into action. There is simply no good advice on the Internet, on how to get into action. (Go figure: All the active people aren’t writing online.)
There are little pockets of advice, here and there – but most of it is bad, and that part of it that is good, is fragmentary - an idea here, an idea there.
Pages
I’m seeding the wiki right now;
Here are some of the pages I intend to start with:
- TheatresOfAction – Most advice on action focuses on one theatre, or maybe two theatres. For example: “Motivation” and “Planning.” Or: “Habits” and “Place & Time.” But the picture of action is incredibly large. What theatres are we tracking? Which are important, which are not?
- ThoughtAboveAction – a very common mistake: to imagine that thought is above action – present in most cosmologies
- OnlineActionSociety – Wouldn’t it be great if this weren’t only a wiki, but rather – a wiki + a society of people dedicated to helping you to get into action?
- PeopleAreDifferent – What works for one person does not necessarily work for another. Some people work incredibly focused at work, but bring zero focus to anything outside of work. Others are the exact opposite. Some people’s minds fill with ideas, others have hardly anything going on beyond what they work on.
- MetaphorsOfThought? – Do our images about thought and action hinder us?
- ThoughtsThatUnlock? – Our philosophy of life can hold us back from action. We may struggle and struggle and struggle to act, but our philosophy may impose a glass ceiling on how far this struggle can take us.
- WhatsNext? – “What is my next step?” If we don’t know, we can get in big trouble.
- ActionPyramid? – “What purpose does this action serve?” The pyramid of how actions support other actions.
- AbortsAndLateStarts? – You don’t have to finish a task that you started, just because it’d be a “waste” otherwise. Further, if you’re late, you can still start.
- FreedomFromBondage? – Freedom comes, paradoxically, from the ability to serve. What is freedom, if not the freedom to obey?
- TemPo? – “Tempo,” or the frequency with which relevant acts come to pass. High tempo leads to higher tempo, low tempo leads to lower tempo. There is a stepping function.
